We Distinguish
What is We Distinguish? We distinguish.
Francis Turretin’s Institutes of Elenctic Theology is divided up into books, topics, and questions. For example, in book three of the Institutes, question 17 reads: “Did Christ rise by his own power? We affirm against the Socinians.” He then goes on to explain and defend his answer. Many of the questions are phrased this way, “Is x the case? We deny against the papists.” On issues that cannot be easily answered with a one-word response, he often stated the question, “Is Christ to be adored as Mediator? We distinguish.” That’s where we got our name.
The project was originally going to be a short (less than one half-hour), weekly podcast that distinguished between two concepts in theology. We thought this would be helpful to the Church, because Christians often get things like the decretive and prescriptive wills of God confused.
As we discussed it, we decided to expand from just a podcast to include a blog as well. We’ll still be discussing theology once a week, but we’re going to add to that short and long-form blog posts, links to and commentary on the theological happenings on the internet, and of course, copious memes.
Turretin said that all Christians are obligated, out of love for neighbor, to help in the reforming of the church in whatever ways they lawfully can (Institutes Book 3, Topic 18, Question 23, section 9). While we’re not pastors or even experts, we hope and pray that the content we provide and resources we link to will stir up Christians to reject the errors opposed to the nature and purity of true faith.
Stay tuned.
